The aims of Huddinge municipality’s international cooperation are to improve the service provided by the municipality and contribute to the European and international development. Through cooperation with other countries and cultures, Huddinge can both learn and contribute.
Huddinge is a knowledge based municipality. Characteristic features are amongst others three universities, research institutes and a knowledge intensive business community. This profile makes Huddinge extremely dependent of the surrounding world. Consequently, an open mind and cooperation with other countries is natural and vital for the future development of the municipality.
International policy
Huddinge has an international policy that has been approved by the municipal Council Assembly. The policy ascertains the importance of international activities, and states which areas have priority in the international work.
The priority areas for international cooperation are the following:
- Diversity, gender equality and democracy
- Social issues
- Lifelong learning
- Business community and academic institutions
- Environment, sustainable development
- Urban planning/development
- Culture and athletics
Twin-towns
For many years, Huddinge has been involved in a Nordic twin-town exchange scheme between five municipalities; Askim in Norway, Lyngby-Taarbaek in Denmark, Vanda in Finland, Seydisfjördur in Iceland and Nuuk on Greenland. Huddinge also has a cooperation agreement with Tychy in Poland.
Stockholm region
In 1995 Sweden joined the European Union. This step opened completely new prospects for international cooperation for local authorities in the Stockholm-Mälar Region. As a consequence, the Stockholm Region was established. The role of the organisation is to facilitate the international work for its stakeholders and promote the Stockholm region in Europe. Stockholm Region is a close partner for Huddinge municipality, and constitutes an important link between Huddinge and other municipalities in Europe.
